Ikea Pendant Lamp Gone Retro Mid-century Gold

June 10, 2021

For the longest time, I yearned to have a pendant light hanging over our breakfast table. Naturally, I wanted one that felt unique with a touch of a midcentury modern/vintage style. After a long stretch of failed attempts at finding the right one that spoke to me, I kind of gave up on the idea. Either the ones I loved were way too expensive or were not the right size. But as usual, when you stop looking for something, that’s when you find it. That’s exactly how I ended up with this pendant light fixture. One afternoon when the hubby and I made a quick trip to Ikea for some other items, I spotted their SKYMNINGEN pendant lamp. It was a hard toss-up between this particular one and two others. Ultimately, the curved turbine shape of this one stood out to us. Though it wasn’t exactly what I had in mind for our breakfast corner, I knew I could give it a facelift. Thus, I embarked on yet another diy makeover!

I love how the new paint color accentuates its curves and shape – transforming it into such a dazzling light pendant now that rivals any timeless mid-century modern vintage style lighting. Yet again, in a matter of a couple of hours and several cans of spray paint, I was able to turn this super inexpensive Ikea pendant lamp into this elegant gone retro mid-century gold exquisite piece of art. We absolutely love the pleasant light it casts at night and the character it adds to that corner of the space.

As usual, my process is pretty simple and just takes a little (or in this case, a lot) of spray paint and energy to get the look. I simply took all the blades right out the box, wiped them clean, laid them down on paper outside, and started spraying them (in this spray paint color) in the direction of the grain which is lengthwise. I gave them time to dry in between coats before adding another coat. I waited for all twenty blades to dry before flipping them to paint the other side. I would say, I gave each side about two coats. But you can do it as light or as dark as you prefer. I went through three and a half cans of paint with this project. So buy four cans to be on the safe side.

I read that this Ikea pendant lamp has been awarded ‘Good Design’, which is one of the world’s most prestigious design awards. After this complete makeover transformation, I can certainly see why. Wouldn’t you agree?
