OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE INSPIRATIONS + 7 TIPS ON HOW TO FIND YOUR DESIGN STYLE

March 23, 2015

This is the time of year that I’ve been eagerly waiting for so I can tackle my terrace space outside our home office. Unfortunately, our Spring here in NYC is lagging behind – stalling my progress. I just hope that we don’t go from winter straight to Summer as they’re predicting another cold blast and more snow still to come our way. It’s a little bit disappointing, as I was planning to start my planting in early spring so I could have full lush plants filling my walls and pots by summertime {not to mention, my tea time plans}. But on the positive side, it’s giving me more creative time to daydream and give my design plan the attention and thought that it deserves by exploring beautiful outdoor spaces similar to what I have in mind, so I can have an idea of the direction to take when Spring finally blooms – instead of rushing through my choices only to fall short on the design that I’ve been envisioning. Hopefully soon! If you’re in a similar situation on your side of the world, I hope these outdoor space inspirations motivate you on this Monday and make you feel as excited as I am for the warmer days to come.

Like any other endeavor, designing and decorating an outdoor space will be more successful if the planning process is well-researched. The first step is determining what your wants and needs are for the space. Here are 7 questions to ask yourself and think about in order to figure out a successful design style:

1. What do you want the garden to do for you?

2. What do you want to do in the garden?

3. Who are you planning the garden for?

4.Do you have young children who need a safe functional space to play in?

5. Are you an older couple who need an easily maintained garden for a quiet and shady place to relax in?

6. What is the climate/microclimate of different areas where you’re looking to add plants?

7. Have you created a floor plan, dividing the area into zones leaving space for ample traffic flow around furniture?
