Design Inspirations: Quaint Kitchens

October 9, 2012

Downsizing has its pros and cons for sure. Some of the pros are: less space to clean and maintain, which gives you the gift of time and that is huge! Some of the cons: depending on how the space is laid out, it means a much smaller kitchen – which for me, is a huge con/sacrifice, because I love to cook.

When you’re used to a much bigger kitchen space, it’s easy to forget that bountiful cabinetry is a relatively new luxury to the kitchens of today’s society. A few generations ago, open shelving cabinetry was more likely the norm along with a limited workable counter space. Sometimes I think, if I’m going to be stuck with a punitive kitchen I would rather it be like the old-fashioned quaint kitchens of the 50’s with those antique fridge and gas stoves {like the one in Breakfast at Tiffany’s} that exude warmth and coziness, instead of some of these new cheap particle board-like cabinets that they retrofit into these pre-war apartments in the city. That’s why for now, I live vicariously through the look of these beautiful kitchens on my inspiration boards on pinterest. Some modern, some with old charm, some galley kitchens like mine, and some that are just amazing! See more here
